Learn how to paint this beautiful scene
A new MJS TV lesson inspired by a beautiful summer landscape by Peder Mønsted. The idea came from a question in the Members Studio about how I would block the painting in, and it quickly became clear it would make a great full lesson.
I take a slightly looser approach than usual, focusing on expressive brushwork, natural colour and subtle changes in light to capture the feel of the original.

What You’ll Learn in this 7 Part Tutorial
Work through the painting from the initial block-in to the final details, showing how to build the scene in a loose but controlled way.
You’ll learn how to:
Establish the main shapes, values and composition
Build depth through layered trees and foliage
Paint believable reflections and still water
Create natural grasses, reeds and foreground texture
Use looser brushwork without losing structure
Control edges, contrast and colour temperature
Add the final details that bring the whole scene together
This lesson is a great chance to work in a slightly looser style while still keeping the realism and depth that make the painting convincing.

It’s a little different from my usual style, but it was really enjoyable to paint and there’s a lot to learn from the techniques used throughout the lesson.
I hope you enjoy the new lesson, and don’t forget to share your progress with us in the Members Studio.
