The Art School
Hi I’m Michael James Smith and I’m a professional artist with over 20 years of experience in oil painting. I specialise in painting landscapes, as well as a range of other subject matter, such as seascapes and still life. You can explore some of my work over in the gallery.
My dad is also an artist who has provided me with much inspiration and guidance over his years of painting, although, as I’ve been painting since I was a teenager, I have of course developed my own techniques and style. I am still lucky enough to share a studio with my dad today.
Since I have been placing my videos on YouTube and Facebook, I’m delighted that I now have in excess of 100,000 subscribers and followers. The overwhelming response from my online followers motivated me to put together my online art school, with tutorials to cater for the complete beginner through to the more experienced artist. I also wanted to build a community within my tutorials, so if you want to chat with like-minded artists or you simply would like to share your latest work then join the online forum, which is exclusively for members.
I really believe that anyone has the ability to learn how to paint. It doesn’t matter how your first attempts turn out, painting with oil paints takes time and practice.
My online art school tutorials are there to help and guide, whether you are looking for guidance with colour mixing or which brushes to use, or you would like to learn the more intricate painting techniques and styles.
My in-depth tutorials are easily accessed through my online art school and they cover a range of subjects, each very different, in easy to follow step by step instructions. The tutorials include covering the preferred paintbrushes, the paint colours I am mixing and the ratios to use, through to explaining my own tried and tested techniques to help you achieve my photo-realistic style of painting. To make it easier, each full-length tutorial, which is approximately 7 hours, is broken down into easy to manage shorter videos. There is a comprehensive equipment list for each individual lesson, as well as a downloadable reference photo and a sketching guide to help you plan out your initial sketch on your canvas or board.
I hope you will love my tutorials as much as I loved making them. I will continue to add new lessons every month to my library of tutorials, so you can continue to advance your painting skills using new subject matter. I’m sure you will see the difference in your artwork within a short space of time and I can’t wait to join you on your journey of painting with oils.
Michael, congratulations to your art school and for all the great work you have done. I really like it. Best wishes!
You are amazing and I love your work. I’ve been painting landscapes in oil off and on since age 12 and I’m now retired. I’m a devoted amateur painter. I’ve been following you on YouTube for about a year now and it’s been great fun. Thanks again to a great artist and human being. You’re the best!
Hurry! I have been waiting for this and I am thrilled! CONGRATULATIONS on the launch of your wonderful school!
My Partner and myself have just recently discovered you, and we love your technique in painting trees and water, we would like to thank you in showing your technique as now we have both started oil painting again. Love your work.
